Women and cosmetics have a long history going back thousands of years. Toxic chemicals were the ingredients in cosmetics and were responsible for many women dying from their use of lipstick and other cosmetics. The history can be traced back as far as 6000 years.

Ancient Babylonians smashed gems to get the color they wanted to spread on their lips. Egyptians produced a purplish red lipstick using iodine and bromine. Another lipstick formula was carmine bettles crushed and then combined with ant’s eggs to produce a red lipstick. This concoction was most likely the red that adorned the lips of Cleopatra.

Red lips with a white powdered face became the style of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.

Painting your lips in the 1700’s could have gotten you burned at the stake. A law was passed in England because it was thought that women wearing cosmetics bewitched men into marriage.

Queen Victoria spoke against wearing makeup and during her reign, lipstick and other makeup was considered bad taste. In Victorian times it was important for a woman to adhere to Queen Victoria’s rules if she wanted to be accepted in society.

Film stars in the 1900’s used makeup bright intense shades and influenced women to mirror them. Starlets like Lana Turner, Betty Grable, Gloria Swanson, and others helped women to see the advantages of makeup. Estee Lauder and Elizabeth Arden started cosmetics line out of their salons ,the beginning of a long time business.

Styles have changed in the passing years. Although ingredients and colors have improved, the attraction of lipstick cosmetics remains the same as 6000 years ago.

Women have applied cosmetics for many years to enhance that sexy sultry look. Self confidence is a benefit of looking our best. If you are short on time just apply your lipstick to give you a little oomph.
